View Full Version : Losing fluid from front axial through breather

I have a 2001 Ram 3/4 tonne 4X4. Every time the outside temperature increases to 70 or 80 F (spring and summer, I live in Canada), some fluid will leak out of the long hose that is connected to the front axial on the passenger side. It looks like there is some sort of breather at the end of the hose. The hose is connected to the axial and extends about 3 feet upwards and is tie-wrapped to the passager side wheel well. The fluid (gear oil I assume) definitely leaks out the top of this hose and leaves a stain on my driveway.

I have had the truck since new. This started happening about 3-4 years ago. It happened with the original gear oil and again after I replaced the gear oil. Again, it only happens when the truck in parked in warm weather. Never happens in winter.

Any thoughts on what might be causing this ???

My 2001 RAM 2500 Quad Cab, 4x4 is blowing oil out that breather while I drive. It happened for the second time yesterday on a 250 mile run. It happened about a year ago as well, then no other blow outs the rest of the summer. Does yours continue to display this behavior all summer?
Mine has 180K plus miles.

I would suspect a blockage in the line or restriction not allowing the pressure to vent . Cheap enough , pull the lines , soak the plastic vent in a degreaser and blow both the line and vent clean with an air hose .

I can't think of anything else that would cause this to happen . Post back and let me know if you find any restrictions , I'd be curious for future reference .

The vent line and breather are not blocked. I can blow through them effortlessly.

Since I posted this, I replaced the vent line with a much longer one and routed it all the way from the passenger side front wheel well to the driver side just below the hood. My vent hose is now about 7 feet long. No more leaks since doing that.

did you check the levels? since it's only when it's warm, logic would tell that there is too much fluid in the diff. since heat makes the fluid and internals expand

Diff level is fine, if anything on the low side.
