This is something that has carried over from our experiences staffing other forums. Its a tool used by staffers to indicate when, for example, "Jason the Staffer" is talking vs. "Jason the ObsessedFanOfEverythingDodgeRam" talking. It helps the readers know when the staff member is enforcing our rules and guidelines, rather than speaking as a member just like everyone else.
Here's an example. Lets say you run into a post by me that looks like the following:
This is your last warning. Keep this thread on track and stop the derailing.

The hat at the end of it is your clue that I have my "staff hat on" and that you need to pay attention to what I'm saying, from a management perspective.
On the other hand, you might run across a post like this:Of course I'm crazy. But that doesn't mean I'm wrong.Notice the lack of hat? That's your clue that I hope we're talking on equal footing without the fear of moderator stuffs getting in the way.
Trying to explain this makes it sound far more dramatic than it really is. In truth, the hat only comes out when any staff member is enforcing the rules as we the owners have asked them too. Take pity on them when that hat comes out, and do what they say. Don't make their job any harder than it needs be. In return for that favor, you have our promise we will NEVER abuse that power and trust. Again, its just another reason we keep the staff here small, and ask you guys to self police most of the time. It allows us to be fans and members first, and moderators a very distant second.
