Background
Dave Arlasky (Chief Engineer) built and raced top fuel Funny Cars and Dragsters back in the 1960’s and 1970’s while owning and operating Chapman Racecars & Engines. Dave’s legendary racecars included Top Fuel Funny Car the Chicago Patrol and the Chapman Charger. While testing racecars and race engines for their clients Dave developed a set of mufflers to help quiet down the engines loud open pipes during Dyno testing. The results from the initial design of the muffler was quite astonishing as it provided their race engines significant increases in torque and horsepower. The design sat in the archives at their speed shop as Dave went onto a new business venture from the mid 1970’s to 1990 where he invented the first automotive security system and founded the leading auto alarm company Chapman Security Systems.
Eleven years later (2001) when Frank Arlasky began working in the performance aftermarket as the VP of Sales for FilterMag he quickly learned that the 6 billion dollar Automotive Aftermarket industry represented a great opportunity. It became even more opportunistic as Frank and Dave Arlasky discovered that the high performance exhaust industry is a 400+ million dollar industry and growing. Frank and Dave continued their market research and concluded that many, if not most, of the current exhaust products and manufacturers have not changed much in over 20 years.
Frank and Dave quickly realized the Dave’s original muffler design back in the 1970’s was an invention that had to come out of the archives. They soon developed the first prototype for Dave’s GMC Denali and validated the initial design based on the resulting horsepower and torque increases from Dave’s vehicle. After a year and a half of design, engineering and product development Frank filed for patent protection and incorporated API in June of 2003. Through this two-year process Frank continued his market research and came across a patented product called a Venturi tip that complimented the Vortex Expansion Chamber and acquired the patents and intellectual property from Powertone the manufacture of the Venturi Tip. This application is an exhaust tip that acts as a sound dampening device while adding performance to the Expansion Chamber.
API’s corporate headquarters opened in January of 2004 and began production of its Zoomers® Exhaust Works. Zoomers® Exhaust Works product line was introduced in March 2004.
