I am having a problem with my four wheel drive. My Truck is a 2000 Quad Cab with 360 and auto trans with 42000 miles. When I am plowing snow the transfer case is jumping in and out of four wheel drive. It is only when I stop and then start again. Once I am going it works OK. I had a friend lay on the ground and look under the truck as it was doing this and found that the front driveshaft is not turning when this happens. That hould rule out vacuum problems to the front axle (I think). Does anybody have an idea what would cause this? Also does anybody have an exploded view with parts list for this transfer case. I think it is a NP231-D.
THanks,
Mark

I'd try re-adjusting the linkage first before anything.

I ended ripping mine apart last week. The nylon pads on the shift fork and mode fork were shot and the synchros were also bad. I ended up putting new synchros and a rebuild kit in. It works perfectly now. I don't know what could cause 2wd not to work?

I don't know what the service manual says, but I would put it in 4 low, Then loosen the bolt on the linkage rod and make sure the shifter and the transfer case are all the way into four low, then tighten the bolt again and see if that works. You could also disconnect the linkage rod and shift it manually from underneath the truck to see if it stays in gear.

That's how you adjust it. Make sure the lock bolt is good and loose before adjustment.
